The Grand Meditation Amphitheatre for World Peace: Module for All

The Dhammakaya Temple was founded on Makabucha Day in 1970 under the leadership of the Ven. Dhammajayo and his meditation teacher Khun Yay Chandra Khonnokyoong, the right-hand disciple of the late Ven. Pramongkolthepmuni who rediscovered the Dhammakaya meditation technique. Together with their disciples and an initial sum of 3,200 baht, the two masters turned the barren land of 196 rai (78.4 acres) into a beautiful temple with the aim of spreading Buddhism, producing virtuous people for society and contributing to world peace.

For nearly four decades, the monks and lay staff at the Dhammakaya Temple and the Dhammakaya Foundation have devoted themselves to the dissemination of the Dhammakaya meditation tradition. The number of people coming to the temple on Sundays rose from a few hundred in the early years to a few hundred thousand now. The Dhammakaya Temple also sends out monks to serve as Buddhist ambassadors to teach meditation to the interested public, leading to successful establishment of meditation centres and temples in more than 15 countries.

All signs pointing to a high possibility that in the near future, more than a million people from all over the world will come to join mass meditation events at the temple. To accommodate a rising number of visiting meditators who otherwise would have to sit in the open air, it became necessary for the temple to initiate the construction of the Dhammakaya Meditation Hall, the Dhammakaya Cetiya and most recently the Grand Meditation Amphitheatre for World Peace.

In 1994, Ven. Dhammajayo initiated the idea of constructing the Dhammakaya Cetiya to serve as a unifying centre for Buddhists worldwide. It was planned to be a place where Buddhists and even peace lovers of other faiths can make merit, observe precepts and meditate together for individual happiness and world peace. The Dhammakaya Cetiya was built entirely with donations from peace lovers of all major religions of the world. The outer sphere of the Cetiya is decorated with 300,000 gold-coated Buddha images while the inner sphere has enough space to fill it up with 700,000 more Buddha images. Each of the Buddha images carries the name of the donor at the base.

Realising the importance of the unity of Buddhists to the life of Buddhism, Ven. Dhammajayo initiated the idea of constructing the Grand Meditation Amphitheatre for World Peace with the goal of uniting Buddhist monks, novices, nuns and lay people of all sects. The meditation amphitheatre and its adjacent area can seat one million people who will come here for mass meditation. It is planned to become not just another gathering venue for ceremonial purposes, but a place where Buddhists and even peace lovers of other faiths can make merit, observe precepts and meditate together for individual happiness and world peace.

The Grand Meditation
Amphitheatre for World Peace was inaugurated on 21 March 2004 when its first foundation pile hit the ground. It is a simple two-storey structure surrounding the Dhammakaya Cetiya. It is being constructed with the best construction materials and state-of-the-art technology to last a thousand years.

Since 2005, the first floor of the meditation a
mphitheatre has been used as a venue for several merit-making events. More and more people from all over the world have come to meditate and make merit here. The first floor is now not enough to accommodate the growing number of merit-makers. Therefore, it is important to complete the roofing of the meditation amphitheatre quickly before a major gathering of monks and other Buddhist followers on 22 April 2008.

Every square metre of the grand meditation amphitheatre is for individual and world peace.

The construction of the Grand Meditation Amphitheatre for World Peace is now in the final stage--the installation of a rust-proof stainless steel roof (The pictures of the roof). The roof can be divided into 860 units, each taking the shape of a pyramid. The base of each pyramid measures 18 x 18 meters. When viewed from above, these pyramid-shaped modules look like cut diamond pieces that surround the Dhammakaya Cetiya. The roof is made of high-quality stainless steel that can withstand storms and acids. It is also covered with insulation material underneath to prevent heat from entering and to keep the place cool. The two-storey Grand Meditation Amphitheatre for World Peace can seat a total of 600,000 people while the space between the Cetiya and the meditation amphitheatre is large enough to seat 400,000 people.

A Place for the Gathering of Monks to Restore Original Teachings

“These days monks of various Buddhist sects spread out to disseminate Buddhism all over the world, enlightening fellow human beings with the teachings of the Lord Buddha. They work separately according to their personal ideas and understanding. There is no unity in the teaching and practice. Therefore, there is no strength in the teaching of Buddhism to lay people because; the sun splits itself instead of acting in unity like a single sun. In fact, the original teachings of the Lord Buddha are scattered in many scriptures of various sects and languages. It’s high time that we acted and unite as one to restore all the original teachings and behave in the same manner as in the Lord Buddha’s time. Laymen and laywomen everywhere will then learn the original teachings of the Lord Buddha from monks and follow the same correct practice.”

A Place Where Differences Disappear

In the Lord Buddha’s time, there were no sects and no differences in belief, code of conduct or practice. Monks, nuns, novices as well as laymen and laywomen all followed the same original teachings of the Buddha. Differences in belief led to differences in practice---and eventually variations of Buddhism, which in turn caused confusion among lay people seeking to study the religion. If we can restore the original teachings, follow them and behave in the same way, there will be no sects, no separation, and no differences. “We are making a history in Buddhism—a history of doing virtuous deeds, of founding an important religious structure, which will bring great benefits to the world. It is a goal worth pursuing. If we have done a great thing for many fellow human beings and helped create peace among humankind, we can take pride in living a worthwhile life.

Our presence in the world will become more worthwhile if we join hands with other peace lovers worldwide in completing the construction of the Grand Meditation
Amphitheatre for World Peace. We live in the times of founding this essential venue, in the pioneering period of establishing the world’s center for Buddhism. We have to help each other to get construction completed.”

A Place of Merit-Making and Source of Infinite Merit

Over the thousand years as more and more people come to meditate and do other good deeds, the Grand Meditation Amphitheatre for World Peace will become a source of infinite merit to the donors. The merit of being one of the founders who make a contribution towards the construction of the meditation amphitheatre will bring peace, happiness and wealth to the donors not only in this lifetime but also in the hereafter. This meditation amphitheatre is not just a place for temporary gatherings, but also a place that actually creates world peace from inner peace, a place to dissolve differences and to unite, a source of real peace and happiness on Earth.
